|My Fair Lady|
|Author||Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe (ad. from George Bernard Shaw)|
|Overview||Musical adaptation of Shaw's 'Pygmalion'.
It tells the tale of poor, lower class flower girl, Eliza Doolittle's accidental meeting of the upper class Professor Henry Higgins. After what seemed an insignificant bet with his colleague and house guest, Colonel Pickering, he enlists the help of his house staff (Poor Professor Higgins), determined and obsessed with grooming Ms Doolittle into passing her off as a lady in front of heads of state, aristocracy and even royals at a ball. Trying her out at the races in Ascot, she struggles through and wins the affection of all she meets, including Higgins' mother and notably the infatuation of Freddie Eynsford-Hill (On The Street Where You Live). When Eliza appears ready for the ultimate test (By George I Think She's Got It) they take her to the ball where she is rumoured to be a Hungarian Princess. Eliza is on cloud nine after the success (I Could Have Danced All Night) , but Higgins appears to lose interest in his ingenue (You Did It). Falling out and moving out, they then both realise they can't live without one another (I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face and Without You) and stubbornly they both refuse to admit this but end up being drawn back together. Classic tale of poor girl meets rich boy, girl makes good, they fall in love and we're to presume they live happily ever after.
